Housing starts should remain in a flat-to-slightly-upward trend. While the timing of annual retooling shutdowns in the vehicle sector can roil results, the trend remains clearly healthy. Home sales are trending up, though gradually.

Abstract

The week began with an okay start this morning as the NY Fed’s Business Leaders Survey, a regional services poll, firmed slightly. The headline index rose more than a point to 5.4 in July, a level indicating modest expansion. The employment index perked up +4 points to 9. Also this morning, the National Association of Home Builders’ monthly index ticked down a point to 59 in July; it has been trading in a narrow, healthy range.
