Eleanor Shiori Hughes is currently a Defense Analyst at The Asia Group, a strategic advisory firm based in Washington, DC. She is also a contributing writer for EconVue. Her research interests span a wide range of subjects, U.S. engagement in the Indo-Pacific, Japanese foreign policy and security, Japan - Taiwan relations, the talent pipeline in the semiconductor industry, and the impact of China's rise in the 21st century. Ms. Hughes frequently authors reports and opinion pieces on contemporary geopolitics in Asia. Her works have appeared in The Japan Times, Wall Street Journal, Real Clear Defense, The Lowy Institute’s Interpreter, among other outlets. She has been interviewed by and quoted in broadcast and online media including Nikkei Asian Review, TaiwanPlus, and The Taipei Times. 

Ms. Hughes has previously worked at the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI), the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and the Georgetown Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues. She is a member of the Pacific Forum’s Young Leaders Program, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), and the Council on Foreign Relations’ Young Professionals Program. 

She holds a MA in Asian Studies from the Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service and a BA in History from Saint Mary's College. She speaks Japanese.

A Post-Abe Japan in the Reiwa Era

Eleanor Shiori Hughes, an MA Candidate in Asian Studies at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS),  reported on a recent CSIS webinar entitled "Japan After Abe: Legacy and Next Moves", where the panelists discussed PM Abe's announcement to resign from his premiership and what Japan's domestic and foreign policy imperatives will look like once his successor has been determined.
